Dr. Zhang Xiuhong

Mastitis mainly presents as redness, swelling, heat, and pain in the breast. It is commonly seen in lactating women and is primarily caused by blocked mammary ducts and bacterial infection. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, mastitis belongs to the category of "Ru Yong" (breast abscess) and is usually treated with herbs that clear heat and detoxify, promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. The following are some commonly used TCM herbal prescriptions:

1. Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin: Composed of Honeysuckle (Jin Yin Hua), Wild Chrysanthemum (Ye Ju Hua), Dandelion (Pu Gong Ying), Viola (Zi Hua Di Ding), and Semen Siegesbeckiae (Tian Kui Zi), this formula clears heat and detoxifies and is suitable for the early stages of mastitis.

2. Xiao Yao Wan: Although not specifically for treating mastitis, it helps regulate liver qi stagnation and may provide some relief for breast discomfort caused by qi stagnation.

3. A prescription composed of Coix Seed (Yi Yi Ren), Patrinia (Bai Jiang Cao), Sargentodoxa (Hong Teng), Gleditsia Spine (Zao Jiao Ci), and Salvia (Dan Shen) clears heat and dampness, promotes blood circulation, and reduces swelling and pain, making it suitable for mastitis accompanied by local swelling and pain.

4. A prescription composed of Gentiana (Long Dan Cao), Scutellaria (Huang Qin), Bupleurum (Chai Hu), Angelica Sinensis (Dang Gui), and Red Peony Root (Chi Shao) clears liver fire, promotes blood circulation, and removes blood stasis.

Please note that the above prescriptions are for reference only. Actual use should be guided by a TCM physician, with adjustments made according to individual constitution and condition.
