Recently, I have noticed significant breast enlargement, mild breast tenderness, slight nausea, and a feeling of bloating in the abdomen. Since my menstrual period is also late, I am worried about the possibility of pregnancy. Doctor, can breast tenderness be a sign of pregnancy?

Breast tenderness can be a symptom of early pregnancy, as hormonal changes in the body after pregnancy—especially the increase in estrogen and progesterone—may cause breast tissue to swell, resulting in discomfort or soreness in the chest area.

However, this is not a unique sign of pregnancy. Many factors can cause breast tenderness, such as hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, side effects of birth control pills, breast hyperplasia, stress, or anxiety. If you suspect you might be pregnant, you can take a urine pregnancy test to confirm. If breast tenderness persists and is accompanied by other symptoms such as delayed menstruation, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
