What does it mean to have high total cholesterol?
My own cholesterol level is very high, and my doctor mentioned that my total cholesterol is elevated. I just want to understand, what does it mean to have high total cholesterol?
Elevated total cholesterol is a common form of lipid abnormality, and possible causes include the following:
1. Dietary factors: Consuming excessive amounts of foods rich in saturated fats and cholesterol, such as red meat, full-fat dairy products, and processed foods, can lead to increased cholesterol levels in the blood.
2. Genetic factors: Having family members with abnormal cholesterol metabolism may increase the risk of hereditary hypercholesterolemia. In such cases, there may be issues with the body's ability to synthesize and clear cholesterol.
3. Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as lack of physical activity, obesity, and smoking can also negatively affect cholesterol levels, leading to elevated total cholesterol.
High total cholesterol can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is recommended to control cholesterol levels through dietary improvements, increased physical activity, smoking cessation, and, when necessary, medication. If cholesterol levels remain consistently high, consultation with a physician is advised.
