What does ESR test for?
Because my menstrual cycle has been somewhat irregular, I came to the hospital for a checkup and had an ESR test. I would like to know what the ESR test is used for.

ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) is a laboratory test used to check for inflammation or infection in the body. ESR, also known as sedimentation rate, measures how quickly red blood cells settle within a specified period of time. Normally, an increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate indicates the presence of inflammation, infection, or other pathological conditions in the body.
This test reflects the body's inflammatory response and helps in the diagnosis and monitoring of certain diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus. When ESR results are higher than the normal range, they may suggest the presence of acute or chronic inflammation. Although the ESR test cannot directly diagnose a specific disease, it can serve as an auxiliary tool for assessing overall health status.
Changes in ESR levels may also be influenced by other factors, such as age and gender. A single ESR result alone is insufficient for diagnosis and usually needs to be analyzed comprehensively along with other clinical examinations and symptoms. When ESR results are abnormal, it is recommended to consult a doctor immediately.
