Disease description:

I am currently about 15 weeks pregnant, and I need to go to the hospital tomorrow for a non-invasive DNA test. However, I don't know much about this test, so I would like to ask whether fasting is required for the non-invasive DNA test?

Non-invasive DNA testing does not require fasting. This test involves drawing peripheral blood from the pregnant woman, from which fetal free DNA is extracted. High-throughput DNA sequencing technology is then used to analyze the DNA and diagnose whether the fetus has chromosomal abnormalities, such as trisomy 21, trisomy 18, trisomy 13, and others. Since the DNA levels in the peripheral blood of pregnant women remain constant and are not affected by food or water intake, non-invasive DNA testing does not require fasting. However, although fasting does not affect the test results, pregnant women should maintain a light diet and avoid high-fat, high-protein foods several days before blood collection to prevent unnecessary interference with the blood sample. Additionally, non-invasive DNA testing is generally recommended after 12 weeks of pregnancy to ensure the accuracy of results. If needed, please consult a qualified physician or medical institution.
