Can I still breastfeed my baby if I have a breast infection (mastitis) and a fever?
The breast milk has not been flowing properly, and the blocked nipple has caused acute mastitis. I currently have a fever. May I ask if it is still safe to breastfeed my baby while having a fever from milk stasis?

Whether a mother with a fever can continue breastfeeding mainly depends on the severity of the fever and whether she is taking medications.
1. If the fever is caused by acute mastitis due to milk stasis and the body temperature does not exceed 38.5℃, breastfeeding can generally continue. In such cases, the breast milk is usually unaffected, and continuing to breastfeed can help relieve breast congestion and promote recovery. However, it is important to maintain proper breast hygiene before and after feeding to prevent cross-infection.
2. If the fever exceeds 38.5℃, or if the mother is taking medications that may affect the infant through breast milk, it is advisable to temporarily stop breastfeeding. During a high fever, breast milk may contain bacteria or viruses, and medications can also be excreted into the breast milk, potentially affecting the infant's health. In such cases, a breast pump can be used to express milk to keep the breasts clear and prevent worsening of the inflammation due to milk stasis.
When necessary, consult a physician for advice.
