Disease description:

I have been experiencing swelling in my calves due to kidney disease, but recently I noticed that my ankles have also started to swell. Since I already have underlying kidney problems, I would like to ask whether ankle swelling is related to kidney function?

Ankle swelling can indeed be related to kidney function. One of the primary functions of the kidneys is to filter blood and remove excess water and waste from the body. When kidney function is impaired, such as in conditions like nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, or chronic kidney failure, excess water and sodium may not be properly excreted, leading to fluid accumulation in body tissues, a condition known as edema. Edema often first appears in the dependent areas of the body, such as the ankles and feet, particularly after prolonged standing or sitting. In addition to kidney problems, ankle swelling can also be caused by other factors including heart disease leading to heart failure, liver disease, lymphatic system disorders, deep vein thrombosis, side effects of long-term medications (such as certain antihypertensive drugs), or simple localized injuries or overuse.
