Is fasting required for an NT scan?
Disease description:
Recently, I need to undergo an NT scan and would like to ask the doctor whether the NT scan requires fasting.

Fasting is generally not required for an NT scan. An NT scan, also known as nuchal translucency screening, is an ultrasound examination performed during early pregnancy to screen for fetal chromosomal abnormalities. It is usually conducted between 11 weeks and 13 weeks plus 6 days of pregnancy. This examination mainly measures the thickness of the skin at the back of the fetal neck to assess the risk of genetic disorders such as Down syndrome.
Food intake typically does not affect the image quality of the fetal nuchal area during an ultrasound examination. However, to obtain clearer ultrasound images, some doctors may recommend that the patient fill her bladder by drinking fluids before the exam. A full bladder can help lift the uterus, making it easier for the ultrasound probe to visualize the fetus.
Although fasting is not required specifically for the NT scan, it may be necessary if the pregnant woman is scheduled for other tests that require fasting, such as a glucose tolerance test or certain blood tests. Therefore, before scheduling the examination, it is best to consult with the doctor or the testing center for specific preparation instructions.
