Disease description:

I am 24 years old this year. Recently, I developed pimples on my face with whiteheads. I initially thought they were comedones, but they turned out to be closed comedones. I would like to know the difference between closed comedones and regular comedones.

The main differences between closed comedones and comedones include: 1. Definition and types: Comedones are chronic inflammatory diseases of the hair follicles and sebaceous glands, including closed comedones (i.e., closed comedone acne) and open comedones (such as blackheads). Closed comedones specifically refer to closed papules formed when the hair follicle opening is blocked by excessive keratin, preventing sebum from being discharged normally. 2. Appearance characteristics: Closed comedones usually appear as small white or flesh-colored granules on the skin, feel rough to the touch, and have no visible opening. In contrast, open comedones, such as blackheads, have a small black dot on the surface, formed by oxidation of the mixture of blocked sebum and keratin. 3. Common locations: Both commonly occur in areas with active sebaceous gland secretion, such as the face, chest, and back. However, closed comedones may be more hidden and less noticeable. 4. Treatment methods: Both can be treated with topical medications such as tretinoin cream or adapalene gel, but specific medications should be used according to a doctor's recommendations.
