Dr. Yang Ziqi

Fasting ketosis typically occurs after prolonged fasting or severe malnutrition. When the body's glycogen reserves are depleted, it begins to break down fat in large amounts to produce energy, resulting in elevated blood ketone levels. To treat and correct fasting ketosis, the following measures are recommended:

1. Fluid and electrolyte balance: Ketosis can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance; therefore, adequate water intake is necessary, along with electrolyte supplementation (e.g., sodium and potassium) under medical guidance.

2. Medication: For patients with concomitant diabetes, insulin may be required to control blood glucose and ketone levels.

3. Nutritional supplementation: Gradually resume eating, prioritizing carbohydrate-rich foods such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables to provide energy and reduce ketone production. Avoid reintroducing high-fat foods too quickly, as this may worsen ketosis.

4. Increase physical activity: Moderate aerobic exercise, such as jogging or swimming, and strength training can increase metabolic rate, promote fat burning, and reduce ketone production.

5. Dietary adjustment: Increase carbohydrate intake through foods such as whole grains, rice, steamed buns, and noodles to provide sufficient energy, reduce fat breakdown, and lower ketone production. Limit the intake of high-fat, low-carbohydrate foods and maintain a nutritionally balanced diet. Ensure adequate fluid intake to facilitate the excretion of ketones through urine.
