I've heard that people may experience hiccups before passing away. Is it true that elderly individuals also experience hiccups before death?

In the final stages of life, elderly individuals may experience various physiological reactions, and hiccups are one of them. Hiccups are caused by involuntary contractions of the diaphragm and are usually associated with eating or drinking too quickly or gastrointestinal issues. In the terminal phase, as the patient's bodily functions gradually decline, hiccups are not a common end-of-life symptom.

Signs that an elderly person is approaching the end of life more commonly include a gradual weakening of vital signs, such as slowed breathing, decreased heart rate, and confusion. Hiccups might appear as a temporary phenomenon in some elderly individuals due to specific physical conditions or discomfort before death, but not all elderly individuals will experience this. If an elderly family member develops persistent hiccups, especially when their physical condition is visibly deteriorating, it should be regarded as a warning signal, and prompt medical attention should be sought to provide appropriate relief and care. Hiccups are not an inevitable sign of impending death, as each individual's end-of-life process is unique. If unusual symptoms such as hiccups occur shortly before death and persist for a long time or are accompanied by other discomforts, immediate medical evaluation and intervention are recommended.

In the final stage of life, efforts should be made to provide patients with a comfortable and peaceful environment, respecting their dignity and wishes.
