Blood glucose abnormalities refer to concentrations of glucose in the blood that deviate from the normal range, including both high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

1. Under normal conditions, fasting blood glucose should be less than 6.1 mmol/L, and blood glucose two hours after a meal should be less than 7.8 mmol/L. When fasting blood glucose is ≥7.0 mmol/L or blood glucose two hours after a meal is ≥11.1 mmol/L, it is classified as hyperglycemia. This may be caused by various factors such as diabetes, stress response, or side effects of certain medications. Prolonged hyperglycemia can lead to multiple complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and eye diseases.

2. Hypoglycemia is defined as blood glucose levels below 2.8 mmol/L. It may be caused by improper use of insulin, inadequate food intake, or side effects of certain medications. Hypoglycemia can cause symptoms such as dizziness, sweating, and tremors, while severe hypoglycemia can lead to coma and even be life-threatening.

If symptoms or signs of abnormal blood glucose occur, seek medical attention promptly.
