How to treat and care for emphysema in daily life
Recently, I have been experiencing frequent coughing, often producing white mucus or frothy phlegm. After searching online, I suspect it might be emphysema. How is emphysema treated and managed in daily life?
For patients with emphysema, suggestions for daily treatment and care:
I. Treatment:
① Follow medical advice regarding medication: Take prescribed medications on time as directed by your physician, such as bronchodilators, glucocorticoids, etc., to relieve symptoms and control disease progression.
② Regular follow-up examinations: Regularly undergo pulmonary function tests, chest imaging studies, etc., so that physicians can monitor changes in your condition and adjust treatment plans accordingly.
II. Daily Care:
① Quit smoking: Smoking is one of the primary causes of emphysema and must be completely stopped.
② Breathing exercises: Techniques such as pursed-lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing can help improve respiratory function. Practice several times daily for 10–15 minutes each session.
③ Moderate exercise: Choose suitable physical activities based on your physical condition, such as walking or tai chi, to strengthen your body, but avoid overexertion.
④ Prevent infections: Keep warm and avoid getting chilled. During flu season, receive flu and pneumonia vaccinations in advance.
⑤ Improve the living environment: Maintain a clean and well-ventilated home environment, and avoid exposure to harmful gases and dust.
⑥ Nutritional support: Ensure adequate nutrition intake by consuming more protein- and vitamin-rich foods, such as chicken, fish, fresh vegetables, and fruits.
⑦ Psychological adjustment: Maintain a positive and optimistic attitude and avoid anxiety and stress.
