Alum also has significant industrial applications, including the preparation of aluminum salts, baking powder, paint, papermaking, waterproofing agents, and more. Additionally, it is a common food additive, often included in foods such as fried twisted dough sticks (mahua) and Chinese crullers (youtiao) to act as a leavening agent.

However, alum contains aluminum ions, and long-term excessive intake may have adverse effects on human health, such as interfering with the absorption of minerals like calcium and iron, potentially leading to osteoporosis and anemia. The use of alum should be cautious, as excessive intake may cause adverse reactions such as nausea and vomiting, and long-term heavy use may burden the kidneys.
