Dr. Cao Zhiqiang

Causes of urinary stones include the following:

1. Insufficient fluid intake: This is one of the most common causes. When the body is dehydrated, urine becomes overly concentrated, increasing the risk that minerals and salts in the urine will precipitate and form stones.

2. Dietary habits: Diets high in calcium, protein, salt, and sugar, or low in fiber may increase the risk of urinary stones. For example, excessive intake of animal protein can elevate uric acid levels in urine, thereby promoting the formation of uric acid stones.

3. Genetic factors: Individuals with a family history of urinary stones have a higher risk of developing them. Certain genetic disorders, such as cystinuria, can also increase the risk of urinary stones.

4. Climate and environment: In hot or dry environments, increased sweating leads to more concentrated urine, which can promote stone formation. Additionally, poor water quality—for example, hard water with a high calcium content—may also increase the risk of urinary stones.

5. Diseases and metabolic abnormalities: Conditions such as hyperparathyroidism and gout, as well as metabolic abnormalities such as hypercalcemia, can promote stone formation.
