Low blood pressure 86, high 144: Is medication needed?
I've been feeling dizzy and unwell these days. My blood pressure was measured as 144/86 mmHg. Should I take medication for low diastolic blood pressure of 86 and high systolic blood pressure of 144?
The normal blood pressure range is typically defined as systolic pressure (higher number) between 90 and 139 mmHg, and diastolic pressure (lower number) between 60 and 89 mmHg. A blood pressure reading of 144mmHg systolic and 86mmHg diastolic indicates the systolic value is slightly above the normal range, which falls into the category of mild hypertension (Stage 1 hypertension).
For newly diagnosed patients, especially those without other target organ damage or clinical complications, initial management may focus on lifestyle modifications to regulate blood pressure. Dietary changes are essential, and patients are advised to actively adopt a low-salt, low-fat diet, strictly limiting daily salt intake to less than 6 grams, and avoiding high-sugar and high-fat foods to reduce vascular strain and promote blood pressure stability.
In addition, regular physical activity and weight management are recommended. These lifestyle improvements can help lower blood pressure and may even bring it back to within the normal range. Regular blood pressure monitoring, recording, and observation of trends are also important.
If blood pressure remains elevated or is accompanied by other clinical symptoms, timely medical consultation is recommended, as antihypertensive medications may be necessary to control blood pressure.
