Dr. Tian Hongbo

Blood pressure measurements typically consist of two numbers: systolic pressure (the higher number) and diastolic pressure (the lower number). Generally, normal systolic pressure ranges between 90-139 mmHg, while normal diastolic pressure ranges between 60-89 mmHg.

When the systolic pressure is 137 mmHg and the diastolic pressure is 100 mmHg, the systolic value is close to the upper limit of the normal range but still within the normal range. However, a diastolic pressure of 100 mmHg clearly exceeds the upper limit of normal. A diastolic pressure of 100 mmHg meets the criteria for Stage 2 Hypertension. Therefore, this blood pressure reading is considered abnormal.

The patient should monitor their blood pressure closely and consider taking management measures such as improving lifestyle habits, dietary adjustments, and increasing physical activity. The patient should have their blood pressure checked at the same time of day for three consecutive days. If all three readings are outside the normal range, hypertension can be diagnosed. It is recommended to seek medical advice promptly. In some cases, a doctor may prescribe medication to control blood pressure.
