I plan to donate blood these days, but my friend said that people who are too old cannot donate blood. May I ask, what is the age limit for blood donation?

Dr. Liu Feng

The age regulations for blood donation are primarily based on considerations of human physiological functions and blood safety.

Donors are typically required to be between 18 and 55 years of age. Within this age range, the body's bone marrow has a relatively strong capacity for blood cell production, enabling a quicker recovery after donation without significant impact on overall health. Citizens over the age of 55 are generally advised to stop donating blood, as various bodily functions tend to decline with age, potentially leading to discomfort after donation.

Prior to donation, health screening is also required, including a medical history review, basic physical examination, and necessary blood tests, to ensure both the safety of the blood and the donor's well-being. Even within the specified age range, individuals with certain health conditions may be temporarily or permanently deferred from donating blood.

For repeat donors who have previously donated without experiencing adverse reactions and who meet the health criteria, the age limit may be appropriately extended to 60 years if they are in good health and have a strong desire to donate.

After donating blood, it is also important to rest adequately and replenish nutrition to promote physical recovery.
