How to manage a baby's dry and hard stool
My baby's recent bowel movements have been consistently dry and hard, making defecation very difficult. Seeing my baby in discomfort breaks my heart. I would like to ask, how can I manage and improve my baby's condition of dry, hard stools?
When a baby experiences dry and hard stools, parents can make adjustments as follows:
1. In terms of diet, increase the intake of dietary fiber. Encourage the baby to eat more fiber-rich foods such as bananas, kiwifruit, dragon fruit, Chinese cabbage, celery, peeled apple puree, pears, pumpkin, carrot puree, and whole grains. Ensure the baby receives sufficient fluids, such as water, fruit juice, or warm water. For babies already on complementary foods, ensure an adequate daily intake of water, breast milk, or formula.
2. Regarding lifestyle habits, encourage the baby to develop a routine for bowel movements. Take the baby to sit on the potty at a fixed time each day, even if there is no urge to defecate, to help establish a bowel reflex. Allow the baby appropriate physical activity to promote gastrointestinal motility. Parents can also massage the baby's abdomen clockwise for about 10 minutes daily to help relieve dry and hard stools.
3. Medication adjustment: Under medical guidance, administer probiotics such as bifidobacteria to regulate the intestinal flora and improve dry stools. If symptoms are more severe, follow medical advice to use laxatives such as glycerin suppositories.
If the baby's symptoms persist or if abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, seek medical attention promptly.
