Recently, my eyelid has been twitching constantly, which makes me very worried. I wonder if this condition can resolve on its own. Can eyelid twitching heal by itself?

Blepharospasm is a condition of unknown cause characterized by involuntary contraction or twitching of both eyelids. This disease is a type of dystonia, manifesting as recurrent episodes of eyelid closure, which can lead to functional blindness in severe cases, despite no actual damage to vision. Whether blepharospasm can resolve spontaneously depends on the severity of the symptoms:

1. Mild symptoms, such as those caused by excessive eye fatigue, mental stress, or lack of sleep, may resolve spontaneously through avoidance of eye strain and timely rest.

2. Severe symptoms, such as those caused by increased muscular excitability or long-term overexertion, may be difficult to resolve spontaneously.

The following treatment options are recommended:

1. Physical therapy—injections of botulinum toxin can paralyze the muscles causing the spasms, although the effect typically lasts three to six months and repeat injections may be necessary.

2. Oral medications—nerve-nourishing and antispasmodic sedative drugs may be taken orally to improve the spasms.

3. If oral medications and physical therapy prove ineffective, surgical treatment may be required.

It is recommended to seek timely medical attention upon experiencing symptoms of blepharospasm to avoid delaying treatment.
