What are the common eye diseases?
Recently, I have been feeling some discomfort in my eyes. What are some common eye diseases? I would like to know, if my eyes often become red and itchy, what common eye condition could this possibly be?
Common types of eye diseases:
1. Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism: These three are the most common refractive errors. Myopia refers to difficulty seeing distant objects clearly, hyperopia refers to difficulty seeing nearby objects clearly, and astigmatism is blurred vision caused by an irregular shape of the eyeball or cornea.
2. Dry eye syndrome: Caused by insufficient tear production or excessive tear evaporation, leading to symptoms such as dryness, irritation, and eye fatigue.
3. Inflammatory diseases: Including conjunctivitis and keratitis, often caused by bacterial, viral infections or allergic reactions, presenting with symptoms such as redness, pain, and increased eye discharge.
4. Blindness-causing eye diseases: Such as glaucoma and cataracts. Glaucoma is characterized by elevated intraocular pressure, while cataracts involve decreased clarity of the lens; both can lead to vision loss or even blindness.
5. Macular degeneration: Degeneration of the macula, primarily affecting middle-aged and elderly individuals, and is one of the leading causes of blindness in the elderly.
6. Diabetic retinopathy: In patients with diabetes, high blood sugar damages the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision loss or even blindness.
7. Retinal detachment: Separation of the retina from the wall of the eye, requiring urgent treatment, as it can lead to permanent vision loss otherwise.
8. Corneal diseases: Such as keratitis and corneal ulcers, which affect the transparency of the cornea and cause visual impairment.
