Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder, is primarily characterized by the following symptoms:

1. Social impairment: Individuals with autism have difficulty establishing normal social relationships, lack eye contact, display limited facial expressions, show little desire for hugs or affection from parents or others, and struggle to develop peer relationships with children of the same age.

2. Language and communication impairments: Many individuals with autism experience delayed or impaired language development. This may manifest as not speaking by ages two or three, or experiencing language regression after normal language development. Some individuals may exhibit unusual tone, speed, or meaning of speech that is difficult to understand, making effective communication challenging.

3. Narrow range of interests and stereotyped behavior patterns: Individuals with autism usually show little interest in games or toys that typically appeal to children. Instead, they may prefer playing with non-toy objects. Their behavioral patterns are often rigid, and they insist on keeping daily routines unchanged. When these routines are disrupted, they may display obvious anxiety or resistance.

4. Intellectual disability: The intellectual abilities of individuals with autism vary widely. Some children have varying degrees of intellectual disability, while others have normal or near-normal intelligence.

Some individuals may also experience associated symptoms such as emotional instability, aggression toward others, or abnormal responses to sensory stimuli. The symptoms of autism vary from person to person and may change with age. Therefore, individuals with autism should seek medical attention promptly.
