Causes of Lower Extremity Swelling
Why do my legs swell after standing or sitting for a long time? What causes swelling in the lower limbs?

The main causes of lower limb swelling include the following aspects:
1. Abnormal heart and lung function: Conditions such as coronary heart disease and pulmonary heart disease can impair circulation, leading to lower limb edema. When heart function is compromised, venous return is obstructed, increasing venous pressure in the lower limbs and causing fluid leakage into tissues, resulting in edema.
2. Lymphatic system disorders: Blockage of lymphatic vessels or removal of lymph nodes can impair lymphatic drainage, causing fluid accumulation in the interstitial spaces and resulting in lower limb edema.
3. Hypoproteinemia: Malnutrition or diseases causing hypoproteinemia can reduce plasma colloid osmotic pressure, decreasing fluid reabsorption from tissues and leading to edema.
4. Thyroid diseases: Conditions such as hypothyroidism can cause mucinous edema, most notably in the lower limbs.
5. Trauma: Injuries such as knee fractures or soft tissue damage can impair local blood circulation, causing lower limb swelling.
6. Infections: Infectious conditions affecting the lower limbs, such as suppurative osteomyelitis, may also cause swelling.
If discomfort is experienced, prompt medical attention is recommended.
