What causes swelling and pain on the top of the foot?
While playing soccer, I accidentally injured my foot, resulting in swelling at the ankle, followed by swelling and pain on the top of the foot. Why does the top of the foot become swollen and painful?

Dorsal foot pain and swelling is a common symptom that can be caused by various factors.
1. Soft tissue injury: Excessive exercise or overexertion may lead to aseptic inflammation of the ligaments, tendons, or other soft tissues on the top of the foot, resulting in swelling and pain.
2. Sprains or strains: These commonly occur during sports, walking, or household activities when the foot is accidentally twisted. In such cases, pain and swelling may develop on the top of the foot.
3. Fractures or bone cracks: Severe impact or falls can damage the bones of the foot, including those on the dorsal surface. Swelling and pain in such cases are often severe and may require X-ray examination for diagnosis.
4. Arthritis: Various types of arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, can cause swelling and pain in the top of the foot. These conditions are usually accompanied by joint stiffness and limited mobility.
5. Infections: Conditions such as paronychia, lymphangitis, or soft tissue infections may also cause swelling and pain on the top of the foot.
6. Overuse: Prolonged standing, walking, or wearing inappropriate footwear, especially high heels, may lead to muscle fatigue and inflammation, thereby causing swelling and pain on the top of the foot.
