What should I do if there is pain when pressing along the edge of the jawbone?
I'm 25 years old this year. Recently, I don't know why, the edge of my jawbone hurts when pressed, especially on the right side. This pain affects me quite a bit, making eating and speaking somewhat uncomfortable. Why would the edge of my jawbone be painful upon pressing? Is this condition serious, and what should I do?
Methods for relieving pain upon palpation of the mandibular margin:
1. Rest: Reduce wide mouth-opening and closing movements, and avoid chewing hard objects to lessen the burden on the temporomandibular joint.
2. Cold or heat compress: For pain caused by trauma, cold compresses can be used initially to reduce swelling and pain; for chronic inflammation, heat compresses may be considered to promote blood circulation and resolve inflammation.
3. Medication: Depending on the severity of the pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be used to relieve pain and inflammation; specific medications for neuralgia may be needed if nerve pain is present.
4. Physical therapy: Includes relaxation exercises for the jaw muscles and physical treatments for the temporomandibular joint, such as ultrasound therapy and electrical stimulation.
5. Dental intervention: If the pain is related to dental issues such as cavities or impacted wisdom teeth, dental treatment is required.
