What causes pain above the buttocks?

Disease description:

I've been having pain above my buttocks lately, the area right below the lower back and above the buttocks. The pain can really be quite uncomfortable. Sometimes it's a dull ache, and other times it feels like a sudden sharp刺痛 (stabbing pain). I don't know what's causing it—could it be from sitting too long or something else?

Pain above the buttocks is a common symptom that can be caused by various factors. Below are some common causes:

1. Muscle or tendon injury: Overuse, sudden strain, or sprain can cause injury to the buttock muscles or tendons, leading to pain. Prolonged sitting or poor posture may also result in muscle tension and pain.

2. Gluteal myofascial inflammation: Prolonged sitting, standing for long periods, or strenuous exercise can lead to fatigue of the muscles above the buttocks, subsequently causing gluteal myofascial inflammation. This condition often presents as pain and aching in the upper part of the buttocks, particularly noticeable after exposure to cold or physical exhaustion.

3. Lumbar disc herniation: Lumbar disc herniation is a common spinal condition that can cause compression of the sciatic nerve, resulting in radiating pain in the upper buttocks and lower limbs. This pain may be accompanied by sensory abnormalities such as numbness and weakness.

4. Hip joint disorders: Problems with the hip joint, such as hip arthritis, avascular necrosis of the femoral head, or hip dislocation, can cause pain above the buttocks and may radiate down to the thigh or knee.

5. Sacroiliac joint dysfunction: The sacroiliac joint connects the sacrum and the ilium. When this joint experiences inflammation or injury, it may cause buttock pain.
