My child has been suffering from gastroenteritis, experiencing vomiting and diarrhea for a week now. Could you please explain how gastroenteritis causes electrolyte imbalance?

Dr. Shen Yonghua

Electrolyte imbalance caused by gastroenteritis is mainly due to the following reasons:

1. Excessive loss of fluids and electrolytes: During episodes of gastroenteritis, patients often experience symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, which lead to significant fluid loss from the body. This includes the loss of essential electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium, directly resulting in electrolyte imbalance.

2. Malnutrition: Long-term gastroenteritis may cause poor appetite and insufficient food intake, leading to a deficiency in necessary electrolytes and minerals, further affecting the body's electrolyte balance.

3. Chronic diarrhea: Persistent diarrhea further exacerbates the loss of body fluids and electrolytes, especially potassium ions, potentially leading to conditions such as hypokalemia (low potassium levels) and other forms of electrolyte imbalance.

Electrolyte disturbances may manifest as hyponatremia (low sodium levels), hypokalemia, metabolic acidosis, and can severely affect the function of the heart and nervous system, even endangering life. In treating gastroenteritis, in addition to controlling the infection, it is essential to promptly replenish lost electrolytes and fluids.
