What should a pregnant woman do if she has diarrhea? Will it affect the fetus?
I might have gotten an upset stomach these past couple days and have been experiencing diarrhea constantly. I'm worried it might affect the baby. May I ask, what should a pregnant woman do if she has diarrhea? Will it affect the fetus?

Diarrhea can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, which not only affects the physical condition of the pregnant woman but may also indirectly impact fetal nutrient supply and development. Mild diarrhea may be caused simply by improper diet or exposure to cold and can generally be relieved by adjusting the diet and keeping warm; it usually does not have significant effects on the fetus. However, severe diarrhea may result in maternal dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, and even uterine contractions, possibly leading to threatened miscarriage or preterm labor. If a pregnant woman experiences symptoms of diarrhea, the following measures can be taken:
1. Replenish fluids and electrolytes: Mild to moderate diarrhea can be managed by oral rehydration solutions to prevent dehydration.
2. Dietary adjustment: Pregnant women should avoid eating spicy, raw, cold, or unclean foods, and should choose bland, nutritious, and easily digestible foods such as rice porridge, steamed egg, etc., to promote recovery of gastrointestinal function.
3. Rest: Ensure adequate rest to reduce physical strain.
If diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours or is accompanied by high fever, severe abdominal pain or other symptoms, immediate medical attention should be sought. Diarrhea during pregnancy is not a minor issue, and treatment must follow medical advice.
