Cardiac sudden death is a sudden death caused by cardiac reasons, characterized by its abrupt onset and unpredictability. Death usually occurs within one hour after the onset of symptoms. When the heart's electrical activity becomes abnormal, leading to cardiac arrest, where the heart no longer pumps blood effectively, sudden death can occur if timely treatment is not provided. The main characteristics of cardiac sudden death include:

1. Cardiac causes: such as coronary artery disease, non-coronary artery diseases, and electrical conduction abnormalities. Among these, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease is the most common cause of sudden death.

2. Sudden onset and unpredictability: Cardiac sudden death typically has no preceding life-threatening signs or symptoms, and patients suddenly lose consciousness and die within one hour of the onset of acute symptoms.

3. Rapid fatality: More than 90% of cardiac sudden deaths are caused by arrhythmias; other conditions such as cardiac rupture and pulmonary embolism can also lead to rapid death.

Cardiac sudden death is the leading cause of non-traumatic sudden death among adults worldwide, especially more common in middle-aged and elderly populations. Individuals with existing heart disease should seek timely medical care and follow medical advice to reduce the risk of sudden death through healthy lifestyle choices.
