Can Roxithromycin and Omeprazole Enteric-coated Capsules be taken together?
I have been taking omeprazole enteric-coated capsules for gastritis. Recently, I developed a sore throat and would like to take roxithromycin. May I take roxithromycin together with omeprazole enteric-coated capsules?

Roxithromycin and Omeprazole enteric-coated capsules can be taken together.
Roxithromycin belongs to the new generation of macrolide antibiotics and is primarily used to treat various bacterial infections, such as pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by streptococcus pyogenes. Omeprazole enteric-coated capsules, on the other hand, are a type of proton pump inhibitor mainly used to suppress gastric acid secretion and are effective in treating diseases such as gastric ulcers and chronic gastritis.
However, Omeprazole may indirectly affect the metabolism of Roxithromycin by inhibiting certain enzymes in the liver, leading to an increased blood concentration of Roxithromycin and a higher risk of adverse reactions. Additionally, Omeprazole's suppression of gastric acid secretion may affect the absorption of Roxithromycin, as Roxithromycin dissolves and absorbs more easily in an acidic environment. Reduced gastric acid could thus affect its bioavailability. Moreover, Roxithromycin may irritate the stomach and is therefore recommended to be taken after meals.
Furthermore, the patient's specific conditions, such as liver and kidney function, age, and weight, may also influence the interaction and safety of these two medications. A physician should make the decision based on the patient's specific condition, medical history, and evaluation of drug interactions. When necessary, monitoring of blood drug concentrations and dosage adjustments should be carried out to ensure therapeutic effectiveness and patient safety.
