What causes excessive sweating in children during sleep?
When my younger sister was being taught something, she started sweating a lot; is she running a fever? Why do children sweat so much while sleeping?
Excessive sweating during sleep is a common phenomenon in children, which may be caused by various factors.
Children have a higher metabolic rate, and especially if they engage in vigorous activity before bedtime, their body temperature regulation system, which has not yet fully matured, can produce more heat during activity or sleep, leading to increased perspiration to dissipate heat and maintain thermal balance. Environmental factors, such as high room temperature, excessive clothing worn at bedtime, or heavy bedding can prevent heat from dissipating promptly, resulting in sweating after the child falls asleep. If the child lacks calcium and vitamin D, it may lead to increased myocardial excitability, making the child more likely to sweat during sleep. In severe cases, rickets may develop. Additionally, some physiological conditions, such as a rapid growth phase, the early stage of a febrile illness, or the convalescent phase of a disease, may also increase perspiration.
If the child experiences associated symptoms such as weight loss, poor appetite, persistent high fever, or other abnormal signs, increased sweating may be an early manifestation of certain diseases. In such cases, prompt medical consultation is necessary for thorough examination and diagnosis to identify the underlying cause and initiate timely treatment.
