Can I drink high-calcium, low-fat milk if I have high uric acid levels?
I usually have the habit of drinking milk before bedtime. Recently, I was found to have high uric acid levels and would like to switch from regular milk to high-calcium, low-fat milk. May I ask if it is okay for me to drink high-calcium, low-fat milk?
In cases of high uric acid levels, patients can consume high-calcium, low-fat milk. Hyperuricemia, or elevated uric acid levels, is mainly associated with diseases such as gout and kidney stones. High-calcium, low-fat milk does not directly increase uric acid levels in the blood. In fact, moderate consumption of dairy products, especially low-fat or fat-free options, may help in managing uric acid levels.
The low-fat content in high-calcium, low-fat milk does not lead to a significant increase in uric acid levels. At the same time, the abundant proteins, vitamins, and minerals, such as calcium, in low-fat milk are beneficial to overall health. High-calcium, low-fat milk is considered a low-purine food, producing less uric acid after metabolism. Calcium supplements also do not affect uric acid metabolism, thus not causing an increase in uric acid levels or triggering gout.
However, individual body conditions vary, and dietary adjustments should be made according to personal health status, medical history, and medical advice. If there are issues such as lactose intolerance, allergies, or specific conditions like chronic kidney disease, patients should consult their doctors before consuming dairy products.
