Disease description:

My father has had kidney problems to begin with. Today, after going to the hospital for tests, it was found that his creatinine level is over 500. I would like to ask, can this level be reduced?

Elevated creatinine levels can be reduced mainly depending on the underlying cause of the elevation and the degree of kidney damage. Creatinine is a metabolic byproduct of muscle metabolism, primarily excreted by the kidneys. An increase in serum creatinine levels usually reflects declining kidney function, as when the glomerular filtration rate decreases, the clearance of creatinine also decreases, leading to an increased concentration in the blood.

If elevated creatinine is caused by acute kidney injury, in most cases, appropriate medication, adequate caloric intake, and possibly dialysis treatment can successfully lower creatinine levels, and the patient's clinical symptoms can significantly improve. However, if the elevation is due to chronic kidney diseases such as chronic glomerulonephritis or diabetic nephropathy, medication alone often cannot reduce creatinine levels to the normal range. In such cases, the main treatment goal is to slow disease progression and prevent further deterioration of kidney function.

Patients with high creatinine levels should adjust their diet by reducing intake of red meat and increasing consumption of protein-rich foods such as eggs and milk, while ensuring adequate caloric intake. Patients should also regularly monitor their blood creatinine levels to stay informed about changes in kidney function.
