Disease description:

A few days ago, I went to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor told me I have kidney stones, but they are small in size and can be passed naturally. I would like to ask, how long does it generally take for kidney stones to be expelled?

Dr. Yang Guang

The time required for passing kidney stones varies from person to person, mainly influenced by factors such as the stone's size and location, individual health status, and treatment methods used. Generally, small stones less than 4 mm in diameter may pass spontaneously within a few weeks, while larger stones, especially those exceeding 2 cm in diameter, may require surgical intervention. Recovery and stone passage time following surgery will also be prolonged accordingly.

For smaller stones, doctors may recommend drinking plenty of water—at least 2 liters daily—to increase urine output and help flush the stones out through the urinary tract more quickly. Additionally, certain medications, such as alpha-blockers, can help relax the muscles of the ureter and facilitate stone passage. Maintaining appropriate physical activity can also aid in moving and expelling stones. Larger stones may require treatments such as extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy or surgical removal. Furthermore, individual factors such as ureteral patency and urine volume can also affect the time required for stone passage.

If symptoms worsen or the stones cannot be passed spontaneously, timely medical attention should be sought.
