Weaning refers to the cessation of milk secretion from the breasts. When a child reaches 1-2 years of age, it is appropriate to gradually begin weaning the child from breastfeeding. After weaning, the breasts no longer need to produce milk, and thus milk regression (weaning) becomes necessary. The correct method of weaning should follow the principle of gradual reduction. The following methods may be used:

1. Gradually reduce the frequency of breastfeeding: For example, reduce from 8 feedings per day to 6, then to 4, while increasing the interval between feedings. Formula milk or complementary foods can be used as substitutes, allowing the breasts time to adjust.

2. Adjust diet: Reduce intake of greasy foods such as chicken or duck soup to decrease milk production; increase consumption of foods that aid in weaning, such as barley tea, maltose, and leeks. Reducing fluid intake may help decrease milk production, but adequate hydration should still be maintained to avoid dehydration.

3. Drain residual milk: If the breasts feel swollen, express a small amount of milk using a breast pump or by hand. However, do not completely empty the breasts, as this may stimulate further milk production.

4. Avoid breast stimulation: Minimize physical stimulation to the breasts, such as wearing loose and comfortable undergarments and avoiding breast compression or massage.

5. Cold compress: When the breasts feel sore or engorged, apply a cold compress or cold towel to the breasts to relieve discomfort.

6. Oral medication: Under a doctor's guidance, use malt water or vitamin B6 tablets to assist in weaning.

Try to avoid weaning during summer or when the child is ill to prevent adverse effects on the child's health. If severe pain, fever, or other abnormal symptoms occur, seek medical attention promptly.
