What causes vaginal itching and white discharge resembling tofu residue?
Recently, I have experienced some itching in the vulva, and my vaginal discharge resembles tofu residue. I would like to know what might be causing these symptoms.

Vulvar itching accompanied by curd-like vaginal discharge is typically a classic manifestation of vaginal candidiasis. Candida species normally exist in the human body, but may overgrow and cause infection when host resistance decreases, vaginal environment changes (such as excessive cleaning, antibiotic use, contraceptive medications), or glycemic control is poor. This condition is commonly associated with the following causes:
1. Candida vaginitis: One of the most common causes, it results from excessive proliferation of Candida albicans. It may be triggered by decreased host resistance, inappropriate antibiotic use, or frequent vaginal douching. Typical symptoms after infection include increased vaginal discharge, which appears curd-like or clumpy, accompanied by vulvar and vaginal itching, odor, and discomfort.
2. Poor hygiene habits: Washing the vulva several times daily or using strongly alkaline soaps may excessively dry the vulvar skin, causing itching.
3. Inappropriate clothing: Wearing synthetic underwear or using non-breathable sanitary pads may also lead to vulvar itching.
Treatment typically involves topical antifungal medications such as clotrimazole or miconazole suppositories or creams. In severe cases, oral antifungal drugs may be necessary. Additionally, attention should be paid to personal hygiene; avoid using irritating cleansers to wash the vulva, wear breathable cotton underwear, and keep the vulvar area dry and clean.
If symptoms persist or recur frequently, prompt medical consultation is recommended to rule out other diseases and receive targeted treatment.
