Medical abortion is generally suitable for women who are within 49 days of pregnancy. The entire process is as follows:

1. Consultation and evaluation: The woman's health and pregnancy status are thoroughly assessed to determine whether there are any contraindications for medical abortion. An ultrasound examination will also be performed to determine the duration and location of the pregnancy. Additionally, a urine pregnancy test, vaginal cleanliness check, screening for trichomoniasis and fungal infections, complete blood count, and blood typing will be conducted.

2. Medication administration: The anti-progesterone drug mifepristone is taken to block the effects of progesterone and cause the embryo to stop developing. This medication is taken orally for the first three days, during which most women experience no significant side effects, although some may experience nausea, vomiting, or light vaginal bleeding. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours later, misoprostol is taken in the second step. This medication causes uterine contractions that expel the embryonic tissue from the body. Typically, misoprostol is taken on the fourth day, and approximately 70% of women will expel the gestational sac within 4 to 6 hours. The gestational sac is usually expelled completely along with vaginal bleeding, followed by the shedding of the endometrial tissue.

3. Observation and recovery: Cramping and vaginal bleeding may occur, which are considered normal reactions. It is recommended to rest at home. If heavy bleeding or persistent high fever occurs, immediate medical attention is required. After the abortion, the patient should remain in the hospital for one hour to ensure there is no abnormal bleeding. Rest is important for the following two weeks, heavy physical labor should be avoided, and proper perineal hygiene should be maintained.

4. Follow-up examination: About one week after the medical abortion, a follow-up visit to the hospital is required. An ultrasound examination will be performed to confirm whether the abortion was complete and to assess the recovery of the uterus. Sexual intercourse should be avoided until the body has fully recovered to prevent unintended pregnancy.

Although medical abortion is relatively safe, it must be performed under the guidance of a qualified physician to ensure safety and effectiveness.
