What causes swelling of the left eyelid?
My left upper eyelid suddenly became swollen and slightly painful. May I ask what could be the cause of the swelling in my left upper eyelid?
Swelling of the left eyelid is a common symptom, and possible causes include:
1. Sleeping in an incorrect position, such as lying face down, can put pressure on the eyes, affect blood circulation, and consequently cause eyelid swelling; eye fatigue, such as frequently staying up late or insomnia, can also impair local blood circulation around the eyes and lead to swelling.
2. Consuming large amounts of water, especially excessive water intake before bedtime, may cause fluid retention in the body, resulting in eyelid edema.
3. Insect bites, such as those from bees or mosquitoes, may trigger insect bite dermatitis and cause eyelid swelling.
4. Trauma, such as scratching the eyeball while inserting contact lenses, or inflammation following injury to the cornea or conjunctiva.
5. Eye inflammation, such as conjunctivitis or keratitis, mainly caused by infection with pathogenic microorganisms like bacteria or viruses, often accompanied by symptoms such as redness, pain, and increased secretions.
6. Eye allergies, such as contact with allergens like pollen, medications, or pet dander, often lead to allergic eyelid inflammation, accompanied by itching and tearing.
7. Diseases of the lacrimal gland, such as dacryoadenitis or lacrimal gland tumors, can also cause eyelid swelling.
8. Systemic diseases, such as thyroid dysfunction, kidney disease, or heart disease, may manifest in the eyes and cause eyelid swelling.
9. Tumors, although less common, benign or malignant tumors of the eyelid or adjacent structures may present as swelling.
10. Vascular diseases, such as hemangiomas or vascular malformations.
If eyelid swelling persists or symptoms worsen, prompt medical attention should be sought for diagnosis and treatment.
