I have been having trouble sleeping lately, which has been very distressing. Every night around midnight, I experience severe lower back pain that significantly affects my sleep quality. During the daytime, I also feel some mild discomfort in my lower back. I would like to know why I am experiencing this nighttime lower back pain. This situation has persisted for some time now—what could be causing it?
Lower back pain at night may be caused by various factors, commonly including:
1. Improper posture: Maintaining poor posture for extended periods, such as incorrect sleeping positions, may lead to excessive tension or strain on the lower back muscles and ligaments.
2. Lumbar muscle strain: Long-term physical labor or prolonged tension in the lower back muscles may cause lumbar muscle strain, resulting in lower back pain.
3. Disc problems: Conditions such as lumbar disc herniation, in which the nucleus pulposus protrudes or disc degeneration occurs, may compress nerve roots and cause pain.
4. Kidney disease: The kidneys are located on both sides of the lower back; kidney stones, nephritis, and other conditions may also cause lower back pain, especially at night.
5. Osteoporosis: With aging and decreased bone density, spinal fractures may occur, causing back pain.
6. Inflammatory diseases: Conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis often cause more pronounced pain at night and in the morning.
