The tongue coating is a moss-like layer on the surface of the tongue, which normally should be thin, white, and moist. Abnormal tongue coatings, particularly those that are thick and pale white, are usually associated with excessive internal dampness, indigestion, or dysfunction of the spleen and stomach. Additionally, the presence of bad breath may further indicate an imbalance in the bacterial flora of the gastrointestinal tract or oral cavity. This condition may be caused by various factors such as irregular eating habits, long-term late-night activities, and high mental stress.

Patients are advised to ensure adequate sleep, reduce stress, and avoid staying up late. They should quit smoking, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid spicy and greasy foods. Teeth should be brushed at least twice daily, using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean the tongue surface, and a specialized tongue scraper can be used to remove the tongue coating. Eating more fresh vegetables and fruits, maintaining a balanced diet, and moderately increasing the intake of whole grains can help promote intestinal health. Enhancing physical fitness and improving blood circulation can aid in alleviating internal damp-heat conditions.

If changes in the tongue coating are accompanied by other uncomfortable symptoms, timely medical evaluation and related examinations are recommended.
