Is back pain at 35 weeks a sign of engagement (lightening)?
I am almost 35 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing frequent lower back pain. I would like to ask, does lower back pain at 35 weeks indicate that the baby has dropped into the pelvis?

Lower back pain at 35 weeks of pregnancy does not necessarily mean the baby has engaged into the pelvis.
When the baby starts to descend into the pelvis in preparation for birth, it is referred to as "lightening" or "engagement." This process may cause discomfort in the lower back and abdomen, as the baby's weight exerts increased pressure on these areas. However, back pain can also be caused by other common pregnancy-related issues, including but not limited to pressure on the mother's lower back due to fetal weight gain, fatigue of the back muscles, and increased strain on the lumbar spine. These are all common physiological phenomena during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. If the back pain is accompanied by other symptoms such as cramping in the lower abdomen, increased frequency of urination, or a sensation of pressure in the lower pelvis, this may indicate that the baby has engaged into the pelvis. When the baby engages, changes in the center of gravity, combined with hormonal effects that cause joint ligaments to relax, increase the strain on the lumbar spine, resulting in back pain.
If expectant mothers experience discomfort, they should contact their healthcare provider promptly. Additionally, it is recommended to perform gentle exercises, maintain good posture, use heat or cold compresses to alleviate back pain, and ensure adequate rest and hydration.
