Can pregnant women consume xylitol candies?
Recently, someone gave me a pack of xylitol candy. May I ask, can pregnant women consume xylitol candy?
Pregnant women can consume xylitol candies in moderation.
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener commonly used in sugar-free chewing gum and candies as a substitute for sucrose. It does not cause a rapid increase in blood glucose levels like regular sugar, and therefore may help in managing gestational diabetes or weight control during pregnancy. Additionally, it is not absorbed by the intestinal mucosa and therefore does not affect blood glucose levels. Thus, pregnant women can consume xylitol candies in moderation, as it neither raises blood sugar levels nor helps promote gastrointestinal motility, thereby relieving issues such as intestinal gas and constipation.
However, excessive intake of xylitol may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, such as diarrhea or bloating. Furthermore, because xylitol is incompletely metabolized in the body, excessive intake may affect energy absorption, making it less than ideal as an energy source for pregnant women who require adequate nutrition.
Therefore, it is recommended that pregnant women limit their daily intake of xylitol to 10-15 grams to avoid excessive consumption. After consuming xylitol, it is important to observe whether any unusual conditions occur, such as xylitol excretion in the stool. If a pregnant woman already has high blood sugar or gestational diabetes, it is recommended that she control her sugar intake under the guidance of a physician.
