I squeezed a pimple in the facial danger triangle and am worried it might cause a intracranial infection. I currently have no other symptoms. Is there a possibility of intracranial infection?

Dr. Liu Wenmin

The triangle zone refers to the area between the root of the nose and the corners of the mouth. The blood vessels in this region have direct connections with those inside the skull, without venous valves to block the reverse flow. If pimples are squeezed within this area, bacteria may travel backward through the bloodstream into the cranial cavity, potentially causing intracranial infection. However, the probability of such an event is relatively low and typically occurs only in individuals with severely compromised immune systems. In general, a healthy immune system can effectively defend against bacterial invasion.

After squeezing a pimple, it is important to immediately cleanse the face with a gentle facial cleanser, especially the affected area. Then use a clean cotton swab to apply an appropriate amount of povidone-iodine or alcohol to disinfect the wound and kill any potentially remaining bacteria.
