Disease description:

Four weeks ago, I accidentally sprained my ankle. Even though a month has passed, it's still painful, especially when walking. I'm unable to walk normally. Could this be because the injury hasn't fully healed or is there another complication?

A sprain usually refers to an acute injury that occurs around a joint and commonly affects the ligament tissues surrounding the joint, with the ankle joint being a frequent site. If the inner part of the foot remains painful and walking is difficult four weeks after the sprain, this may be related to several possible causes. The soft tissue injury might be relatively severe, involving damage to structures such as the ligaments, muscles, or nerves, which can prolong the recovery period. The sprain may have triggered a bone crack or fracture, especially if the injury involved impact or a fall, making skeletal damage more likely. Additionally, if the injury was not properly treated or sufficient rest was not taken after the sprain, persistent pain could result. The following recommendations are provided:

1. Rest and protection: Continue to avoid overusing the injured foot. Try to minimize the amount of time spent standing or walking, and use crutches or other assistive devices to help reduce the burden on the foot.

2. Ice application: When pain intensifies, ice can be applied to reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort. Apply ice for approximately 15–20 minutes at a time, multiple times per day.

3. Seek medical evaluation: Given the persistence of pain, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly. Imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI scans should be performed to assess for possible fractures, ligament tears, or other complications.

4. Appropriate exercise: Under the guidance of a physician, perform suitable rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the foot muscles and improve joint flexibility, but avoid any movements that provoke pain.

5. Maintain a positive mindset: Recovery is a gradual process, and maintaining patience and a positive attitude can help promote natural healing.
