When a child suffers a burn injury, the following steps should be immediately taken for initial management:

1. Immediate cooling: Quickly place the burned area under running cool water for at least 30 minutes to reduce skin temperature and alleviate pain. Avoid using ice water or ice cubes directly on the skin, as this may cause further damage.

2. Remove clothing: If the burned area is covered with clothing, gently remove the clothing to prevent it from adhering to the wound. If the clothing is stuck to the wound, use scissors to cut away the surrounding fabric, leaving the adhered portion undisturbed.

3. Apply medication: After disinfecting the area, apply a burn ointment such as Jingwanhong Ointment or Moist Burn Ointment to clear away heat and toxins, reduce swelling, and relieve pain.

4. Assess the injury: Observe the size and depth of the burn. If it is a minor burn (limited to redness and swelling of the epidermis), it can be monitored at home. If it is a second-degree or more severe burn (characterized by blisters or skin peeling), the burn is extensive, or it involves special areas such as the face, hands, or feet, seek immediate medical attention.

5. Avoid improper treatments: Do not apply toothpaste, butter, soy sauce, or similar substances to the burn, as these materials are not beneficial for healing and may increase the risk of infection.

The above measures are for initial management only; for moderate to severe burns, prompt medical treatment is essential.
