Acne, commonly known as pimples, is a common skin condition that primarily occurs on areas of the skin with a high density of sebaceous glands, such as the face, back, and chest. Its causes are complex and mainly include the following factors:

1. Excessive sebum production: Overactive sebaceous glands are a common cause of acne. Excess sebum can clog pores and create an environment conducive to bacterial growth.

2. Follicular blockage: In addition to sebum, hair follicles can also become blocked by keratin and bacteria. These blockages gradually accumulate and form acne lesions.

3. Bacterial infection: Bacteria on the skin, especially Propionibacterium acnes, can multiply within blocked hair follicles, triggering an inflammatory response that worsens acne.

4. Genetic factors: If close family members have suffered from severe acne, the risk of developing acne increases in offspring.

5. Diet and lifestyle: High-sugar and high-fat diets, as well as unhealthy lifestyle habits such as staying up late and experiencing high levels of stress, may exacerbate acne.

6. Medication effects: Certain medications, such as hormonal drugs and antiepileptic drugs, may also trigger or aggravate acne.
