Ingrown toenails, medically referred to as "onychocryptosis" or "ingrowing nails," are usually caused by improper trimming of the toenails, wearing tight-fitting shoes, or injury to the toe. Symptoms include pain, redness, swelling, discharge of pus, and in severe cases, infection may develop. The following are recommended measures to address this condition:

1. Soak in warm water: Soaking the affected toe in warm water several times daily can help soften the skin and nail, alleviating pain and inflammation.

2. Trim the nail short: Using appropriate nail clippers, carefully trim away the portion of the nail that has grown into the skin. Take care not to cut too deeply, to avoid bleeding or infection.

3. Keep the area clean and dry: Maintain cleanliness and dryness of the affected area. Wash with antibacterial soap to prevent bacterial infection.

4. Apply ointment: Antibiotic ointments may be applied to prevent or treat infection.

5. Wear proper footwear: Choose loose-fitting, well-fitting shoes to avoid placing additional pressure on the toes.

6. Preventative care: Avoid cutting toenails too short, choose appropriate footwear, and reduce friction and pressure to effectively prevent such problems.

If the above methods are ineffective or if symptoms are severe (such as intense pain, high fever, or persistent pus discharge), prompt medical attention should be sought.
