What causes bleeding a few days after taking birth control pills?
I took the contraceptive pill, and a few days later I started bleeding. I'm not quite sure what caused this. Is this situation normal? Could it have any negative effects on my body?

Bleeding after taking birth control pills is primarily due to the body adjusting to the hormonal changes in the medication.
Birth control pills contain synthetic estrogen and progestin, which prevent pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, altering the endometrium, and modifying cervical mucus. When starting the pill, these hormones may cause slight shedding of the endometrium, resulting in bleeding. This type of bleeding typically occurs after starting the medication and often decreases or stops altogether as the body gradually adjusts. The bleeding is usually light, darker in color, and generally requires no special treatment.
In addition, if the bleeding occurs around the expected time of the menstrual cycle, it may be a normal menstrual period, with bleeding amount and duration similar to a regular period. Birth control pills may cause menstrual irregularities and lead to mid-cycle bleeding. This type of bleeding typically occurs during ovulation and may be accompanied by mild abdominal pain. If the bleeding is heavy or lasts for an extended period, it could indicate hormonal imbalances caused by the medication or other underlying gynecological conditions, and medical consultation is recommended.
