Can pregnant women drink coffee?
I have a pregnant friend who often feels exhausted from work and wants to drink coffee to stay alert. May I ask if it is safe for pregnant women to consume coffee?
Pregnant women are generally not advised to drink coffee during pregnancy.
During pregnancy, a woman's gastrointestinal function is relatively weak and unable to effectively digest and absorb harmful components in coffee. Prolonged consumption may allow substances in coffee to pass through the placenta, affecting the normal growth and development of the fetus and increasing the risk of fetal malformations. Caffeine may also overstimulate the fetus, causing excessive fetal movement, which could potentially lead to complications such as umbilical cord torsion or nuchal cord.
Caffeine in coffee stimulates the central nervous system and can cause insomnia in pregnant women, affecting the normal functioning of various body systems and reducing the quality and duration of sleep. This may further hinder fetal development. Coffee may also interfere with the absorption and metabolism of vitamins and minerals in pregnant women, leading to vitamin deficiencies that could result in fetal growth restriction and developmental abnormalities.
To ensure maternal and fetal health, pregnant women should consume more protein-rich foods such as eggs, milk, and lean meat during pregnancy, which are beneficial for fetal growth and development. They should avoid raw, cold, greasy, and spicy foods to prevent worsening of pregnancy discomforts and reduce the risk of abnormal fetal development.
