Yin deficiency is a term in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that refers to insufficient body fluids (yin), resulting in an inability to restrain yang energy. This leads to a series of symptoms caused by relatively excessive yang energy, such as tidal fever with night sweats, dry mouth and throat, irritability with insomnia, and flushed cheeks.

1. Tidal fever with night sweats: Patients often feel feverish, especially in the afternoon or at night, accompanied by excessive sweating, which does not relieve the heat.

2. Dry mouth and throat: Due to insufficient yin fluids to moisten the mouth and throat, patients may experience dryness of the mouth and tongue, and even sore throat and hoarseness.

3. Irritability and insomnia: Yin deficiency disturbs the mind (shen), causing patients to feel restless and irritable, with difficulty falling asleep, poor sleep quality, or frequent waking.

4. Flushed cheeks: The face, especially the cheek areas, appears abnormally ruddy, which indicates internal heat due to yin deficiency.

These symptoms may vary depending on individual differences and the severity of the condition. TCM typically follows the principle of nourishing yin and relieving dryness, tailoring treatment based on the patient's specific condition. If left unmanaged, prolonged yin deficiency can further deplete the body's vital energy (zheng qi), impair quality of life, reduce resistance to disease, and potentially trigger other illnesses.
